Mission Beach's Holidays Happen on the Boardwalk. The Bay Gets One Night.

November 5, 2026

Mission Beach's holiday calendar this year comes down to one address and one date. The address is Belmont Park. Its Winter Wonder festival opens the weekend of Nov. 13 and runs until Jan. 3, 2027. The date is Saturday, Dec. 12. That evening the Mission Bay Parade of Lights crosses the water, and earlier the same day Pacific Beach holds its Santa Run and its Holiday Parade a short ride up Mission Boulevard.

So for about seven weeks, the ocean side of the peninsula carries the season every day. The bay side gets one night. Once you know which weeks are quiet and which Saturday isn't, planning the whole season gets easy.

The Anchor at the South End

Belmont Park bills Winter Wonder as "chill vibes, thrill rides, and a million lights." Its own calendar first lists the festival on Friday, Nov. 13. That's a little earlier than 2025, when Times of San Diego reported the festival opened Nov. 15 and ran through Jan. 4. This year the season is about the same length and moved up by a couple of days. That puts opening weekend about two weeks ahead of Thanksgiving.

Inside the festival, a few things repeat on a schedule:

  • Jingle Jams is DJ-spun holiday music from 2 to 5 p.m. Belmont Park describes it as a Saturday event, and its November calendar also shows it on several Sundays.
  • Winter Wonderland at Draft is the Christmas-themed cocktail pop-up, running Nov. 27 through Dec. 27. Times of San Diego covered its debut in 2025, so this is its second season.
  • Acoustic Sunsets at Cannonball continues on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. It's a year-round listing rather than a holiday event, and it's the calmest evening option at the park through the season.

Hours change from day to day. Belmont Park's November calendar shows Fridays and Saturdays open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Weekdays often close at 6 p.m., though some run to 8 p.m. The lights look best after dark, which comes early this time of year, so a weekday visit can work if you check the date-specific calendar first. Rides cost extra through the paid Ride & Play wristband, which covers unlimited rides and attractions.

The Landmark You'll Walk Past

Walk to Winter Wonder along Ocean Front Walk and you'll pass the 30-foot temporary lifeguard tower the City put up this year next to the fenced-off old station. According to Times of San Diego's June report, the City has identified $13.4 million toward a replacement estimated at $25 million, leaving $11.6 million unfunded. The temporary setup stays until a permanent station is built.

The City's May Revision for fiscal year 2027 proposed another $2 million for a phased replacement at 3141 Ocean Front Walk. A May City report described the project as being in the bridging-documents stage, ahead of selecting a design-build team. So the tower beside the million lights will still be temporary when the lights come down in January. That matters for the next part of the season. The south end of Mission Beach is the busiest spot on the peninsula through the holidays, and it's also the spot where the public infrastructure is the most makeshift.

Saturday, Dec. 12, Hour by Hour

The rest of the season spreads out over weeks. This one day packs together nearly everything held on or near the peninsula, starting with a morning run on Garnet Avenue and ending with boats on the bay after dark.

  1. 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The San Diego Santa Run sends 5K waves off from its start and finish at 912 Garnet Ave. A kids' mile follows at 11:30 a.m. and a dog mile at noon.
  2. 1 to 3 p.m. The 46th Pacific Beach Holiday Parade, themed "Holiday Magic," runs along Garnet Avenue from Haines Street to Bayard Street.
  3. 2 to 5 p.m. Jingle Jams plays at Belmont Park, back at the south end of the peninsula.
  4. 4 to 6:30 p.m. The Dana on Mission Bay, at 1710 W. Mission Bay Drive, hosts its Winter Wonderland and Parade Viewing Party. Princess Elsa, Buddy the Elf and The Grinch appear from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
  5. 5:30 p.m. The Mission Bay Parade of Lights begins. According to Discover Mission Bay, SeaWorld's fireworks kick it off.
  6. After the boats The Dana closes the night with its Falling Snow Party.

Mission Boulevard is the main road between the peninsula and Garnet Avenue, so the timing matters. On Dec. 12, a trip north that's easy most Saturdays runs into a parade route in the early afternoon and a boat-parade crowd heading for the bay by evening.

Why the Bay's One Night Happens Across the Water

The boat parade belongs to Mission Bay Yacht Club. "The Parade of Lights was started and has been organized by Mission Bay Yacht Club since the 1970s," club manager John Campbell told Times of San Diego last year. That same article said the 2025 route started near Crown Point and ended near De Anza Cove, based on a map from the yacht club.

If this year's route follows the same course, the parade happens mostly along the bay's northern and eastern shores, across Sail Bay from Bayside Walk. The organized viewing spots are on that side too. Discover Mission Bay lists viewing parties at The Dana, the Catamaran, Tidal at Paradise Point, and Mission Bay Beach Club. Mission Bay Beach Club is promoting a pre-parade holiday market, a visit with Santa, festive drinks and live music.

For Mission Beach, this is the one night of the season when the action is somewhere else. Belmont Park keeps its regular Saturday hours that day, and the parade crowd heads for the far shores of the bay.

Christmas on Crystal Pier, one week before the busy Saturday, is the easier trip north. Santa photos run from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and the tree lighting is at 4:45 p.m., with no parade and no race sharing the day.

When the Bay Side Gets Its Turn

After Draft's pop-up closes on Dec. 27 and Winter Wonder ends Jan. 3, the peninsula's next round of visible change happens on the bay. In April, Axios San Diego reported on two projects. South De Anza is getting a rebuilt parking lot, restrooms, basketball courts and a playground on a $14.5 million budget, with overall completion targeted for spring 2027. At Ventura Cove, the closest of the two to Mission Beach, the old restroom was demolished for a replacement, and new sidewalks and EV parking are planned, for $4.4 million with completion by early 2027.

The holidays stay on the ocean side for one more season, and the bay improvements are scheduled to arrive soon after.

I keep track of these dates the way I keep track of the market here: block by block and week by week. If you're thinking about what your place near the boardwalk or the bay is worth, or about timing a sale around the busiest stretch of the year, Valerie Zatt can help.
